Dai et al ( 2019) estimate the energy use in battery manufacturing facilities in China with an annual manufacturing capacity of around 2 GWh c to 170 MJ (47 kWh) per kWh c, of which 140 MJ is used in the form of steam and 30 MJ as electricity. Ellingsen et al ( 2015) studied electricity use in a manufacturing facility over 18 months.
In the short term, 2022 is not predicted to result in monumental changes. For example, Lithium-ion battery pack prices averaged $140/kwh in 2020 and $132/kwh in 2021. That price is, again, set to rise to $135/kwh in 2022. This is a noticeable price increase, but not a major setback when compared to prices in 2020.
These systems have lower costs per kilowatt and higher costs per kilowatthour. For example, a $12 million battery system with a nameplate power capacity of 10 megawatts and nameplate energy capacity of 4 megawatthours would have relatively low power costs ($1,200 per kilowatt) and relatively high energy costs ($3,000 per kilowatthour).
The chart above shows how the Li-ion battery costs & prices have trended. Starting with a cost of about $1000/kWh in 2010, the costs have dropped to just over $200/kWh in 2018 ā an exceptional drop of 80% in just 8 years.

The system costs range from $380 per kWh for those that can provide electricity for 4 hours to $895 per kWh for 30-minute systems. All right, so what will a 100-megawatt PV system with a 60-megawatt lithium-ion battery with 4 hours of storage cost? Well, we have some options there too:

This is according to leading research company BloombergNEF (BNEF) in its annual battery price survey, which found the price of lithium-ion battery packs grew 7.0 per cent since 2021. Itās the first increase in battery prices since it began tracking the market in 2010, says BNEF, which found volume-weighted average prices for li-ion packs
So, mapping this P/E ratio onto Sakti et al.ās model projects that Teslaās battery pack manufacturing costs are about $200 per kWh. By comparison, in 2014, industry-wide cost estimates of Li-ion batteries at the pack-level were about $410 per kWh.
Meanwhile, the cost of Li-ion battery packs has decreased from over 1,000 US$ kWh ā1 to about 250 US$ kWh ā1 which are lighter and less expensive than Li-ion battery packs on a per-kWh basis.
